Lancelot D'Andrew

Lancelot Dewes Andrew was born on 2nd February 1889 and with his twin sister, Alice, was baptised on 10th March 1889 by their father Henry Andrew, the vicar of Griston,Norfolk. The Rev. Henry Andrew had begun his ecclesiastical career in the curacy of Walton and Felixstowe, firstly as a Deacon in 1872 before being ordained as a Priest in 1873.

In 1878, Rev. Andrew appeared in the Probate Court giving evidence regarding the validity of a codicil attached to the will of the late Hynman Allenby esq.

On the 21st February 1881, Rev. Andrew was instituted to the vicarage and parish church of Griston, Norfolk and on the 20th October of the same year was married to Catherine Mary Allenby, daughter of the late Hynman Allenby. Catherine was the sister of the 1st Viscount Allenby - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edmund_Allenby,_1st_Viscount_Allenby

Henry and Catherine had 4 children. Catherine, the eldest, married Hubert de Burgh Wilmot in 1908. Alice married George Leader Bailey of the Lake Copais Company in 1914, and Richard married Aline Jervis-White-Jervis in 1915.

Lancelot appears on the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses. Shortly after the 1911 census was taken, he emigrated to Canada and took up residence in Mozart, Saskatchewan. Lancelot remained here until 10 April 1916 when he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, serving in Canada until demobbing in November 1918. He had gone to Canada with the aim of farming, but according to the passenger manifest of his visit to England in 1924 Lancelot was working as a brakeman on the Canadian Pacific Railway.

During the 1930s, Lancelot decided on a change of focus and moved from Canada to Mombasa to take up the role of a coffee planter. Perhaps this had been brought about by the death of his mother, Catherine, in 1935. The Rev Henry Andrew was made honorary Canon of Norwich Cathedral and died in 1946 shortly before his 100th birthday.

Lancelot moved back to Griston, where he appeared in this film of 1974 walking passed the church where his father had been a vicar for so many years http://www.eafa.org.uk/catalogue/697

Lancelot died on 22nd April 1980, at Thorp House, Griston.
