Offie Gwatkin

We met Offie's brother in an earlier post https://www.apigintime.net/post/there-s-a-destiny-that-shapes-our-pigs-rough-hew-them-how-we-will and his tragic story has stayed with me - including motivating me to volunteer with the CWGC Eyes On Hands On project.

To recap, Offie (or, more formally, Arundel Theophila Gwatkin) and Robert were the only surviving children of Joseph Reynolds Gasgoine Gwatkin and Arundel Augusta Penruddocke. They were descendants of the painter Sir Joshua Reynolds, and lived a comfortable existence in The Manor House, Potterne. This building is now the HQ of the Fire Brigade and is a listed building with some photos and additional details found here THE MANOR HOUSE, Potterne - 1243110 | Historic England.

Whilst it is unclear whether Offie inherited any artistic skills from her forebears, it does appear that she was a talented violinist, who frequently performed at local concerts (Devizes and Wiltshire Advertiser, 13 April 1913).

Offie married Esmond Copland Copland-Griffiths at St Peter's Church, Eaton Square, London, on 12th April 1913. Barely 9 months later, their first child, Arundel Helen, was born. By this time, Esmond was a Captain in the Montgomery Yeomanry, and the family were living at Melton Lodge, Whitchurch. With the advent of WW1, Esmond had a succession of postings, including to Egypt and France. Offie returned to her family home in Potterne and worked as a VAD making garments, whilst also bringing up her young family - Arundel Helen had been joined by Frederick Charles Brandling (bn 1917) and Theophila Joan (bn 1919).

During peacetime, the Copland-Griffiths family lived in Arklow Cottage, Windsor but following the death of her father just before WW2, Offie and Esmond moved back to Potterne. Firstly they lived at the Manor House, before moving into a smaller house in the village. Esmond died in Potterne in 1955, whilst Offie died in a nursing home in Bath in 1971. For more information about Esmond and his family - including some family photos - then see here New Page — Lucy's Diary (lucysdiary.org) which details information about Lucy Copland and her descendants.
